About Castro Theatre

The Castro Theatre first opened at 479 Castro Street in 1910 and its current larger location is a few doors away, which is at 429 Castro Street. It became a San Francisco Historic Landmark on September 1976, a very popular movie place in San Francisco. The Castro Theater was designed by the architect of the Oakland’s Paramount Theater, Timothy L. Pflueger.

A Gem of a Movie Theater
I love the Castro Theatre. It is a gorgeous architectural space. They even have an old organ that gets played during some intermissions and silent movies. Great theatre and still truly independent.
