About Eastern State Pen

The Eastern State Penitentiary opened on October 25, 1829. Its building structure was designed by John Haviland. It is considered to be the first true penitentiary in the world. The former American prison operated from 1829 to 1971. Some of the infamous criminals who were held custody in the Eastern State Penitentiary are Al Capone and Willie Sutton. It is designated as a National Historic Landmark which is open for tours everyday of the week.
