Located in south central Alaska on the Pacific Ocean, Anchorage is home to almost 40% of Alaska’s population. The city suffered the second-most devastating earthquake in the recorded history of the entire world, registering 9.2 in magnitude, in 1964. Rebuilding and expansion throughout the 1960s and 1970s have left Anchorage a diverse and modern city today, home to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and a vast variety of parks, wildlife refuges, conservation centers, cultural museums and ski areas. Anchorage is also a great viewing area for the aurora borealis, or northern lights, that occur during the long nights of autumn and winter.
