Arlington

Located just outside the capital, Arlington is not actually a city, but a county with its own government. Because of its proximity to Washington D.C. (just across the Potomac River), Arlington is full of national history sites, as well as modern military and defense installments, including the Pentagon. Arlington National Cemetery (home of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier), the Marine Corps War Memorial and the U.S. Air Force Memorial are all located within a short distance from each other. Because it is so close to Washington D.C., day trips to the nation’s capital are as easy as a short train ride across the river. A very cyclist-friendly location, Arlington has over 86 miles of bike trails, including on that takes riders along the Potomac River to George Washington’s family home, Mount Vernon.
