Baton Rouge

While the area of Baton Rouge looks to have been inhabited as early as 8000 BCE, the European settlement of the area was began by the French in 1699 and bears one of the strongest influences of Acadian, or Cajun, cultures in the U.S. The city is home to an expansive visual arts community, with many galleries and museums featuring fine arts, contemporary art, an Ancient Egypt cultural display several local art installations. Mardi Gras lends a festive atmosphere to the entire city every spring, and the Bayou Country Superfest features some of the biggest names in country music each May around Memorial Day. Although Baton Rouge is a unique center of bayou culture, influences from many other cultures give the city’s food and entertainment offerings an international flavor.
