Locate in the northeast corner of Florida, Jacksonville is the largest city in the lower 48 United States by area, and was colonized by the Spanish as early as 1565. After a major reconstruction project resulting from a 1901 fire, Jacksonville became home to more the 30 silent film studios, which today can be viewed as a museum. Jacksonville is also home to the Ritz Theater and the “Harlem of the South,” where many noted African American musicians, including Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Ray Charles often performed. The city operates the largest urban park system in the United State, providing more than 80,000 acres of grounds and facilities for residents and visitors alike, and watersports are available throughout most of the year. Interesting atttractions include the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum and the Friendship Fountain.
