Part of the former Rust Belt and once known for its production of a large part of the nation’s steel supply, Pittsburgh is one of the most economically stable cities in the U.S. It has historically been one of the nation’s most diverse cities as well, with European immigrants arriving via Ellis Island to work in the steel factories and many African Americans migrating northward during the Great Migration of the early 20th century. Many neighborhoods are still rich in ethnic character, including German, Italian, Polish, African American and Jewish. Pittsburgh is also rich in cultural attractions, thanks to the wealthy business men like Andrew Carnegie who donated large amounts of money in the city’s manufacturing heyday. The Carnegie Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History are worth a visit, as well as the Pittsburgh Zoo. For sports enthusiasts, the city is home to the world champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
