Saint Augustine

Founded by Spanish explorers on the northeastern coast of Florida in 1565, St. Augustine is the second-oldest continuously-populated city in the country and was home to both the first European and African American born in the continental United States. St. Augustine was also a major hub of the Underground Railroad, with the Spanish settlers offering refuge and freedom to any slaves who could escape the English settlements to the north. Today, the city is rich in historic architecture and buildings from various time periods. The St. Augustine Alligator Farm, one of the oldest tourist attractions in Florida, is still operating, and the iconic St. Augustine lighthouse on Anastasia Island draws thousands of visitors annually, both those interested in its scenic properties and those looking for reported (and some say documents) paranormal occurrences.
