San Francisco

San Francisco was founded in 1776 and grew rapidly during the 1849 California Gold Rush. This is where the name for their football team, the 49ers comes from. In 1906, about three quarters of the city was destroyed by earthquake and fire. Within 9 years the city was rebuilt and today is one of the major tourist attractions in the world. The unique architecture of San Francisco has a very strong appeal to any tourist. There are many interesting places to visit in the city. Among them is the former Alcatraz prison and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
