Scottsdale

Situated just east of Phoenix, Scottsdale was once home to a major prehistoric people known as the Hohokam, who populated the area as early as 800 AD. Unlike many areas of the United States where Native Americans were forced to leave their cultural lands, the Pima people were in some cases still living in traditional dwellings as late as 1960, and many still live in the area in newer homes today. Scottsdale is home to a thriving nightlife scene and a high concentration of art galleries, studios and museums in the Downtown district. The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, running since 1955, features more than 2,000 of the majestic horses, and a variety of casinos offer Vegas-style gaming. Scottsdale is also considered one of the top-rated golf destinations in the U.S., with more than 200 public and private courses.
